Nina Russ – Hishi Patterns Made Easy
Description Of Hishi Patterns Made Easy
Learn versatile hishi shibari (diamond pattern) techniques
Teaching the method, not just ties
In this course, you will learn a versatile technique to create the iconic diamond (hishi) pattern that can be used on almost any part of the body. Most importantly, Nina explains how the pattern is formed and the rules involved so you can use your knowledge creatively. You’ll see how the pattern works through step-by-step tutorials of example ties that you can learn. Of course, the fun part will be experimenting with this skill to create your own ties or variations.
It’s all very well learning a set tie, It’s a bit like the old adage about giving a man a fish. We like to think of us as giving our students that fish…in fact, several in this case and a very comprehensive fishing lesson into the bargain!
The three example ties are:
- Hishi body tie with optional hojo cuffs
- Hishi futo-momo with optional foot tie
- Classic hishi gote with optional extension down the body
The devil is in the detail
We show you why and when direction matters when creating this pattern. It’s easy when you know how but can be very confusing if you don’t. The same applies to the frictions used so we give a simple explanation so you know exactly when to use which version.
It’s one thing knowing the theory, another putting it into practice so you’ll get some pro handling tips, gained from years of experience, that will help you tie fluently and smoothly.
How do I use left over rope?
We have included optional embellishments since inevitably ties rarely consume the perfect amount of rope. Much of the time, you will end some left over and the problem of how to consume it elegantly.Maybe, you just want to add to the tie to add your own signature or to add to the severity. Think of them as inspiration rather than something to always be copied exactly.
Seeing it in action
There’s nothing quite seeing a pro performing the tie on stage as it’s totally different from a tutorial. You get to appreciate the really important bit: How the rope is applied, not just see the steps. For this reason, we have included a performance from BOUND by Vienna Dojo’s chief Osada Ryu instructor, Vinciens. It provides excellent examples of both rope handling and using the rope the transmit feeling.
In this example, Vinciens creates the tie differently but the method he applies is the same and so are the ‘ingredients’. It will help you understand how they are used so you can make your own ‘recipes’.

Due to its martial arts roots, it brings self-discipline, efficiency, effectiveness and, thus, growth in confidence and awareness. She believes these skills allow a greater focus on the most important aspects: you, your partner and your shared experience.
Rope is simply a means of communication. She wants you to discover through her tying, the language of rope, which speaks directly to the mind and body.
